What do I need to know when bringing a group of kids to Grizzly Creek Ranch?

Who gets to go to Grizzly Creek Ranch?
Children affiliated with nonprofit service organizations can come to Grizzly Creek Ranch.

Grizzly Creek Ranch does not enroll individual campers but works in partnership with nonprofit organizations serving kids with medical, physical, developmental and behavioral challenges, as well as children who are considered at-risk for a variety of social and economic reasons

Is Grizzly Creek Ranch accredited by the American Camping Association?
Facilities, programs, and operating procedures at Grizzly Creek Ranch are designed to meet and exceed the standards of the American Camping Association (ACA).

What does Grizzly Creek Ranch mean by "Special Needs"?
"Special Needs" is a term to describe children with medical, physical, developmental and behavioral challenges, as well as children who are considered at-risk for a variety of social and economic reasons.

How old do you have to be to go to Grizzly Creek Ranch?
In general, Grizzly Creek Ranch is designed for children and youth from seven to 18 years of age. Age requirements are set by our partner organizations.

How much does it cost to go to Grizzly Creek Ranch?
Camper fees are set by the organization using Grizzly Creek Ranch. Some organizations qualify for reduced rates. The Group Camp Planning Guide contains rate information. Download it here.

How do I (or my camper) get to Grizzly Creek Ranch?
Transportation to Grizzly Creek Ranch is arranged through your child’s organization. If you are driving to Grizzly Creek Ranch you can find directions here.

How are activities scheduled?
Grizzly Creek Ranch offers activities and recreational opportunities that accommodate a variety of groups. Each organization using Grizzly Creek Ranch sets their own schedule and chooses from a variety of activities that meet the goals and objectives of their group.

Can you accommodate special diets or special medication?
Our kitchen and trained professional staff can accommodate almost any special dietary request. Grizzly Creek Ranch does not provide medical care directly to campers.

The on-site Wellness Center can take care of bug bites and scraped knees, and support the everyday medical needs of campers. A fully equipped hospital is less than five miles away in Portola.

What do I need to bring to Grizzly Creek Ranch?

What’s the weather like at Grizzly Creek Ranch?

Grizzly Creek Ranch enjoys a four-season climate. In general, summer temperatures range from the 80s in the daytime to the 40s at night. Rain is infrequent in the summer months. In the springtime the average high temperature is 59, the low around 29. In the fall, high temperatures average 66 and lows average 39. Winter months are colder with high temperatures in the mid-40s and lows in the high teens.

Who runs Grizzly Creek Ranch?
Grizzly Creek Ranch is owned and operated by Grizzly Creek Ranch, Incorporated; an independent, nonprofit organization. Major funding for operation of Grizzly Creek Ranch comes from Sierra Health Foundation, a private, independent philanthropy based in Sacramento, California.

Where is the nearest hospital?
A fully equipped hospital is located five miles from Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, California.

How safe is it?
The health, safety and well-being of campers is very important at Grizzly Creek Ranch. Safety standards meet and exceed the standards of the American Camping Association. All activities at camp are supervised by trained personnel. The pool is fenced and swimming is supervised by certified lifeguards and the Challenge Course is supervised by staff members trained in challenge course safety. Campers are accompanied by their counselors during activities. A hospital is less than 10 minutes away in Portola. Every aspect of camp life has the safety of campers as the top priority.

Who supervises my child?
Each organization using Grizzly Creek Ranch brings their own counseling staff and medical personnel (as needed) to supervise their campers. Grizzly Creek Ranch staff members supervise activities on the Challenge Course, swimming pool, etc., with the assistance of the counselors.

What if my child requires special equipment?
Grizzly Creek Ranch was built to accommodate children and adults of all abilities. Special equipment needs can be handled through coordination with your child’s organization and Grizzly Creek Ranch staff.

How do I contact my child while he/she is at camp?
In the event of an emergency: First, contact your child’s organization. Second, call the camp administrative office at (530) 832-1085 and leave a voice mail message. The Grizzly Creek Ranch administrative office is not staffed 24 hours a day; incoming phone messages are recorded and checked frequently.

How many people can you accommodate?
There are on-site accommodations for up to 90 people in the Grizzly Creek Ranch cabins. Each wing of the Dining Lodge can accommodate up to 120 people for meals for a total capacity at mealtime of up to 240. Up to 240 people can be accommodated for meetings and assemblies in theater-style seating.

What are the cabins like?
Each cabin at Grizzly Creek Ranch sleeps 10 people in individual beds. Individuals bring their own sleeping bags or linens. The cabins are insulated, climate controlled, and have bathroom facilities; shower facilities are in the village Activity Lodges.

What recreation facilities does Grizzly Creek Ranch offer?
Major recreation facilities at Grizzly Creek Ranch include the swimming pool, ropes course, archery range and sports court. Check out the Activities section of our Web site for photos and a more detailed description of the recreation opportunities awaiting your group at Grizzly Creek Ranch.

Because Grizzly Creek Ranch enjoys a four-season climate, some of the outdoor recreation facilities may not be available at all times of the year.
